Euroclear has partnered with HSBC to launch an automated foreign exchange service designed to help market participants meet tighter settlement deadlines when European and UK markets transition from T+2 to T+1 settlement cycles. The AutoFX service, scheduled for early 2027, will support over 30 currencies initially and embed FX pricing and liquidity directly into the securities settlement workflow. HSBC will supply pricing and liquidity while Euroclear provides the settlement infrastructure, with clients accessing execution dashboards to monitor currency activity.
The move addresses a significant operational challenge identified by the Financial Conduct Authority, which found in August that two-thirds of surveyed firms doubted their service providers were ready for T+1. Only half of market participants routinely allocated and confirmed trades by end of trade date, highlighting the scale of required process improvements. Cross-border investors will need to secure settlement currency within compressed timeframes, making automated solutions critical to avoiding failures.
Euroclear is following competitors who moved earlier. Clearstream activated its Auto FX service in January 2025, while State Street introduced a similar offering in October 2023 ahead of the US T+1 transition. Neither Euroclear nor HSBC disclosed pricing details, the full currency list, or participating client numbers during testing phases.
The service aims to reduce excess funding requirements, though no specific savings estimates were provided.

Brokers and payment firms servicing institutional clients should evaluate how embedded settlement FX affects their liquidity arrangements and whether competitive pricing opportunities exist outside these increasingly integrated custody platforms.
