HBL’s CTO Muhammad Faisal Anwar outlined critical lessons on banking transformation during an interview at the Temenos Community Forum this week. Anwar warned that financial institutions commonly fail at core modernisation by treating it purely as a technology challenge rather than first establishing clear problem statements and strategic objectives.

The executive emphasized that successful digital transformation requires an empathy-driven approach on two fronts. Internally, banks must treat employees as brand ambassadors whose satisfaction directly impacts business outcomes. Externally, institutions should reframe customer transactions beyond mere products or services, viewing them instead as lifestyle enablers—mortgages represent homes, loans fund vehicles, and savings facilitate holidays.

This perspective shift marks a departure from traditional product-centric banking models that have dominated the industry for decades. Anwar’s comments come as banks globally accelerate core system overhauls to remain competitive amid rising fintech disruption.
