KB Kookmin Bank is launching a blockchain-powered import/export payment service for corporate clients using JPMorgan’s Kinexys platform and its Blockchain Deposit Account network. The South Korean lender becomes one of the first Asian banks to integrate with JPMorgan’s rebranded blockchain infrastructure, formerly known as Onyx, positioning itself to offer faster cross-border settlement capabilities to trading firms.
The move signals growing institutional adoption of blockchain rails for traditional banking services, particularly in trade finance where payment delays and transparency issues have long plagued corporate treasurers. KB Kookmin’s integration with the BDA network means corporate clients can potentially execute international trade settlements with reduced intermediary friction and improved transaction visibility. This development comes as Asian financial institutions accelerate their blockchain strategies to compete in the evolving digital payments landscape.
The implementation could pressure competing Korean and regional banks to fast-track their own blockchain payment solutions or risk losing corporate trade finance business to early movers.
FXnCO Insight
Corporate treasurers managing Asian trade flows should evaluate KB Kookmin’s blockchain settlement timelines and costs against traditional correspondent banking channels to identify immediate efficiency gains.
