European payment processor Mollie has finalized its acquisition of GoCardless, a major player in account-to-account bank payments, the company announced today. The deal combines Mollie’s card payment infrastructure with GoCardless’s direct debit and open banking capabilities, creating a unified platform serving merchants across Europe, North America, and Australia.
The merged entity will process payments for over 500,000 businesses worldwide, giving merchants access to both traditional card networks and modern bank-to-bank transfer rails. GoCardless will continue operating under its own brand while integrating its technology with Mollie’s ecosystem. The acquisition positions the combined company to compete more aggressively against established players like Stripe and Adyen in the rapidly growing instant payment and open banking sector.
This consolidation comes as regulators push for cheaper alternatives to card networks and businesses seek lower transaction fees through direct bank connections. Merchants using either platform can expect expanded payment options in coming months.
FXnCO Insight
Payment service providers should evaluate their direct debit and open banking capabilities now, as this consolidation signals intensifying competition in the account-to-account payment space that could pressure traditional card processing margins.
