The Japanese yen’s recent selloff may be nearing exhaustion as USD/JPY approaches the critical 160 level, according to BNY strategist Geoff Yu. The currency pair’s climb back toward this threshold has significantly elevated the risk of Japanese authorities intervening in currency markets to support the yen.

Yu suggests that tactical long positions in the yen could become attractive as the selling pressure appears to have largely dissipated. Japanese officials have historically shown willingness to act when USD/JPY reaches extreme levels, with the 160 mark serving as a psychological barrier that previously triggered government intervention.

Traders and currency market participants should remain alert for potential coordinated action from the Ministry of Finance and Bank of Japan. Any intervention could trigger sharp reversals in yen positioning, particularly impacting carry trade strategies that have benefited from yen weakness. Options markets are already pricing in heightened volatility around these levels.

Monitor USD/JPY closely near 160 and consider reducing short yen exposure or establishing tactical long positions ahead of potential intervention that could spark rapid mean reversion.
