West Texas Intermediate crude oil continued its slide on Tuesday, marking the second consecutive day of losses as traders dismissed fresh US sanctions targeting Iran. Despite heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the oil market showed limited reaction to Washington’s economic pressure campaign against Tehran.

The muted market response comes even as risks to the Strait of Hormuz shipping lanes remain elevated. The strategic waterway handles roughly one-fifth of global oil traffic, making it critical to energy supply chains. However, traders appear to be betting that Iranian retaliation measures will remain contained or that alternative supply routes can compensate for potential disruptions.

WTI’s weakness suggests market participants are prioritizing demand concerns and adequate global supply over geopolitical risk premiums. The oil market has repeatedly shown resilience to Middle East tensions in recent months, with actual supply disruptions proving minimal.

Energy traders should monitor physical shipping data through Hormuz rather than headline risk alone, as the market is currently pricing in geopolitical stability despite escalating diplomatic tensions.
