European natural gas markets are facing heightened supply tensions as structural tightness intensifies beyond oil markets, according to Commerzbank analyst Norman Liebke. The pressure stems from two critical supply disruptions: Qatari LNG flows to Europe have been completely severed, while US cargo shipments are being diverted away from European destinations toward Asian buyers. This supply squeeze threatens Europe’s ability to maintain adequate storage levels heading into peak demand periods.

The redirection of US LNG cargoes to Asia reflects stronger price signals in Asian markets, leaving European buyers competing for increasingly scarce supply. With Qatari volumes offline and American shipments flowing elsewhere, Europe’s gas balance has deteriorated significantly, raising concerns about storage adequacy and price volatility. Traders and energy-intensive industries across the continent face mounting uncertainty as supply routes narrow.

Energy traders should monitor European gas futures for potential upside breakouts as structural supply constraints create asymmetric risk to the upside, particularly if winter weather forecasts turn colder or Asian demand remains elevated.
