Melbourne-based broker Pepperstone has appointed Nigel Fernandes as Chief Technology Officer effective 1 October 2026, signaling an aggressive technology expansion following its February crypto exchange launch in Australia. Fernandes will oversee global technology operations, including engineering, architecture, security and data functions across Pepperstone’s FX, CFD and newly launched spot crypto platforms. The crypto exchange currently offers Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, USDC and USDT trading against the Australian dollar.

Fernandes brings over 20 years of technology leadership experience, joining from Xero where he served as SVP and Executive General Manager of Engineering. He previously held senior positions at Publicis Sapient, Coles Group, SEEK and Envato. Reporting directly to Group CEO Tamas Szabo from Melbourne headquarters, Fernandes will focus on building AI-native infrastructure and expanding Pepperstone’s proprietary technology capabilities.

The appointment reflects Pepperstone’s strategic pivot toward becoming a broader fintech ecosystem provider, investing heavily in institutional-grade infrastructure and artificial intelligence to support multi-asset expansion beyond traditional online trading.
