The Malta Financial Services Authority has issued an urgent warning about a sharp increase in crypto fraud schemes exploiting confusion around the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation transition. Fraudsters across the European Union are impersonating legitimate crypto service providers, financial regulators, and supervisory authorities to trick consumers into transferring digital assets to criminal-controlled accounts.
Scammers are using forged documents, fake branding, and phishing websites while contacting victims through email, phone, messaging apps, and social media. The schemes typically claim a user’s crypto platform has lost authorization under MiCA rules, pressuring immediate asset transfers to supposedly “safe” or “regulated” wallets. The MFSA confirms these urgent transfer requests could result in permanent loss of funds.
The regulatory transition has created legitimate industry uncertainty as some firms restructure or cease operations, providing cover for sophisticated impersonation attacks targeting crypto holders throughout the EU.
