The Canadian dollar remains locked in a holding pattern against the US dollar, trading steadily around the 1.41 level as currency markets await critical policy decisions from both the Federal Reserve and Bank of Canada. Scotiabank strategists Shaun Osborne and Eric Theoret note the loonie’s movement is primarily influenced by short-term interest rate differentials rather than commodity dynamics, even as oil prices strengthen.
The stability comes despite what would normally be supportive conditions for the Canadian currency, with higher crude prices typically bolstering the resource-linked loonie. However, the divergence in monetary policy expectations between the two central banks is currently the dominant force keeping USD/CAD range-bound. Traders and currency desks are maintaining cautious positions ahead of upcoming rate announcements that could shift the differential calculus significantly.
FXnCO Insight
Monitor front-end rate spreads closely rather than oil price action for near-term USD/CAD directional plays, as monetary policy divergence is currently overriding traditional commodity correlations in driving the pair’s movement.
