The London Stock Exchange will launch overnight trading in the first half of 2027, operating separately from its main market with hours from 5pm to 7.50am. The new venue will initially offer exchange-traded products tracking UK and US markets rather than individual shares, targeting retail investors particularly in Asia who want London time-zone access to global assets.
LSE chief executive Julia Hoggett cited demand from worldwide retail investors for round-the-clock trading capability. The move follows competitive pressure from crypto platforms like Coinbase and Kraken offering 24/7 stock trading, alongside US exchanges including Nasdaq and NYSE pursuing extended hours. The initiative comes as London faces a severe listings drought, raising just £74.7 million in Q1 last year versus $8.9 billion in the US, while equities trading represents only 2.7% of LSEG’s revenue. Institutional investors remain lukewarm on extended hours, contrasting with retail demand for immediate market access shaped by crypto trading expectations.

Retail-focused brokers should prepare infrastructure for extended-hours LSE trading by 2027, as crypto-influenced client expectations force traditional exchanges into round-the-clock competition for volume.
