Hong Kong digital lender ZA Bank is granting staff an additional unpaid leave day following this Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final, reviving its “football hangover” policy. The move allows employees to recover after what is expected to be late-night viewing of the championship match due to time zone differences between Hong Kong and the tournament location.
ZA Bank, one of Hong Kong’s virtual banking pioneers, previously offered similar arrangements during major sporting events to boost employee morale and recognize work-life balance priorities. The unpaid leave option comes as financial institutions increasingly compete for talent in Hong Kong’s tight labor market, where workplace perks have become key differentiators.
While this is an unpaid benefit rather than paid time off, it signals continued emphasis on employee retention strategies in the fintech sector. Other Hong Kong financial services firms have not announced similar measures.

Financial institutions monitoring employee satisfaction metrics should note creative leave policies are emerging as low-cost retention tools in competitive Asian fintech markets where talent acquisition remains challenging.
