Siam Commercial Bank has become the first financial institution worldwide to activate Citi’s newly integrated round-the-clock USD clearing system combined with Citi Token Services, the banks announced today. The Thai lender is now operational on the platform, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of tokenized settlement infrastructure for cross-border payments.

The integration enables SCB to process US dollar transactions continuously outside traditional banking hours, leveraging blockchain-based token technology for near-instant settlement. This addresses a critical pain point in international payments where time zone differences and banking hours create delays and liquidity constraints. The move positions SCB ahead of regional competitors in offering clients faster, more efficient cross-border transaction capabilities.

For the broader financial services sector, this deployment signals accelerating institutional adoption of tokenized payment rails beyond pilot programs. Other banks are likely monitoring performance metrics closely as they evaluate similar infrastructure investments.

Expect increased competitive pressure on regional banks to adopt 24/7 settlement capabilities as SCB gains first-mover advantage in tokenized cross-border payments for Southeast Asian markets.
