Coinbase has secured UK regulatory approval to offer traditional investment services, marking a major expansion beyond cryptocurrency trading. The Financial Conduct Authority authorisation enables Coinbase’s UK entity to provide equities trading for retail customers and derivatives products including crypto, equity, and commodity perpetual futures for institutional and advanced traders. The approval builds on Coinbase’s European expansion strategy following its March launch of regulated OTC crypto and equity-index derivatives across 26 countries under a Cyprus MiFID II licence.
The move positions Coinbase to capitalise on the UK’s seven million crypto holders ahead of broader digital asset regulations taking effect in October 2027. Coinbase plans to consolidate multiple financial services on one platform, including stablecoin payments, savings, borrowing, and future tokenised real-world assets. The expansion reflects growing institutional demand for unified trading venues that bridge traditional and digital markets.
