Japanese financial giant SBI Holdings announced Tuesday it will acquire domestic cryptocurrency exchange Bitbank in a deal valued at approximately 289 million dollars. The acquisition strengthens SBI’s position in Japan’s tightly regulated digital asset market as the financial conglomerate continues expanding its crypto infrastructure footprint.

The transaction comes as traditional financial institutions accelerate their moves into digital assets amid growing institutional adoption. SBI already operates its own crypto exchange and has extensive blockchain investments across Asia. Bitbank, one of Japan’s established platforms registered with financial regulators, will add trading volume and customer base to SBI’s existing crypto operations.

The deal represents continued consolidation in Japan’s cryptocurrency sector, where stringent licensing requirements have created barriers to entry but also established legitimacy for compliant operators. Market participants should monitor whether this triggers additional merger activity among regional exchanges seeking scale or backing from larger financial players.
