CME Group announced a major leadership change Tuesday, with CEO Terry Duffy stepping down in March 2027 after leading the derivatives giant for over two decades. Duffy, who became chairman in 2002 and CEO in 2016, will transition to Executive Chairman while current President and CFO Lynne Fitzpatrick takes over as chief executive and joins the board.

Duffy’s tenure transformed CME from floor-based trading to electronic markets and included landmark acquisitions of the Chicago Board of Trade in 2007 and the New York Mercantile Exchange in 2008. Under his leadership, CME reached a market capitalization exceeding ninety-five billion dollars with average daily volumes hitting twenty-eight point one million contracts last year.

Fitzpatrick joined CME in 2006 after stints at Credit Suisse and UBS, becoming CFO in 2023 before her promotion to President and CFO in 2024. The transition provides nearly two years of planning runway as CME prepares to launch single stock futures on fifty-plus major equities this summer.

Traders should monitor CME’s product expansion and competitive positioning closely during this extended leadership handover, particularly as single stock futures rollout coincides with the transition period.
