The US Dollar is gaining strength as heightened geopolitical tensions and surging oil prices drive global bond yields higher, according to OCBC analysts Sim Moh Siong and Christopher Wong. Renewed US-Iran tensions are contributing to market volatility, pushing investors toward the greenback as a safe haven. Markets have now fully priced in a 25 basis point Federal Reserve rate hike by October, reinforcing hawkish monetary policy expectations that continue to underpin dollar strength.

The combination of elevated energy costs and tighter Fed policy expectations is creating upward pressure on Treasury yields, further supporting the dollar’s position against major currencies. Traders are repositioning portfolios to account for the likelihood of sustained higher interest rates through the fourth quarter. The oil price surge adds inflationary pressure that could keep the Fed on its hawkish trajectory longer than previously anticipated.

Dollar longs remain attractive into October as geopolitical risk and fully-priced Fed tightening create a dual tailwind for greenback strength against risk-sensitive currencies.
