The US dollar faces emerging structural pressure as surging imports of AI-related capital goods significantly widen America’s trade deficit, according to Volkmar Baur at Commerzbank. The deficit expansion is driven by companies rushing to acquire advanced computing hardware and infrastructure needed for artificial intelligence development, much of which is manufactured overseas. Currently, robust foreign appetite for US assets is successfully financing this growing imbalance, keeping dollar demand supported despite the widening gap.

However, Baur warns that any deterioration in global confidence surrounding the US AI investment narrative could expose the greenback to downside risks. If international investors begin questioning the sustainability or profitability of America’s AI spending boom, the capital flows financing these imports may weaken substantially. This would leave the enlarged trade deficit without adequate support, potentially triggering dollar weakness.

Traders should monitor sentiment shifts around US tech sector AI spending and foreign capital flows, as any cooling in the AI investment story could rapidly pressure the dollar through trade deficit financing concerns.
