Canadian teenager Trenton Richard Johnston has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering after stealing over $13 million in cryptocurrency through sophisticated social engineering scams targeting major platforms. The 20-year-old and co-conspirators impersonated staff from Google, Coinbase, and Trezor throughout early 2024, convincing victims their accounts were compromised before draining funds. The largest single theft netted approximately $13 million in Bitcoin from a California victim.

Johnston rapidly spent $1.2 million on luxury vehicles including a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ and multiple BMWs, private jet travel, and high-end rentals across Miami and Los Angeles. The scheme unraveled in March when he was stopped for speeding in a Rolls-Royce carrying suspected amphetamine tablets. He has surrendered 53.16 Bitcoin and 275.23 Ether worth around $3.7 million and faces a recommended sentence of 51 to 63 months, avoiding potential 40-year maximum charges through cooperation.

Crypto holders should immediately verify all support communications through official channels only, never through inbound calls or messages, as impersonation scams continue targeting high-value accounts across major exchanges.
