Charles Schwab has launched around-the-clock cryptocurrency futures trading on its thinkorswim platform, marking the broker’s first 24/7 product offering. The futures cover bitcoin, ether, solana, and ripple, giving clients price exposure without direct token ownership. More significantly, Schwab announced plans to deliver spot crypto trading and custody services to its registered investment advisor network by mid-2027.
The move targets Schwab’s advisor channel, which custodies over five trillion dollars across more than 16,000 advisors who currently route client crypto allocations to external custodians. Integrating digital asset custody alongside traditional securities would consolidate substantial advised capital under one roof. The announcement comes as retail crypto enthusiasm wanes, with bitcoin dropping roughly six percent on the news day amid broader market weakness. Schwab opened retail spot trading for bitcoin and ether this spring through Paxos at 75 basis points.
