Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission is set to undergo a leadership change, with George Karatzias expected to be appointed as the new Chairman, replacing Dr George Theocharides. Local media outlet InBusinessNews reports that official confirmation will come today following a Council of Ministers session. Karatzias previously served as CySEC’s Vice-Chairman from 2021 to 2024 before joining the Central Bank of Cyprus as an Executive Board Member.
Loukas Lagoudis, a current CySEC board member with risk management and investment banking expertise, is reportedly slated to become Vice-Chairman. Dr Theocharides has led CySEC since September 2021, overseeing increased supervisory activities and establishing the national registry for Crypto Asset Service Providers under the EU’s MiCA regulation.
Karatzias brings extensive financial services experience, having headed Alter Domus’ Cyprus fund services division and served on the Cyprus Investment Funds Association board. His background spans international audit and fund administration sectors.

Brokers operating under CySEC should anticipate continuity in regulatory oversight given Karatzias’ prior supervisory experience, though his crypto registry expertise may signal continued focus on digital asset compliance.
