The Polish zloty faces fresh pressure after National Bank of Poland Governor Adam Glapinski delivered unexpectedly dovish commentary following today’s policy decision to hold rates steady at 3.75 percent. While the central bank maintained its neutral stance on paper, Glapinski’s press conference tone diverged sharply from market expectations, according to Commerzbank analyst Tatha Ghose.

The dovish pivot undermines zloty support at a critical juncture for the currency, which had been trading on expectations of a more hawkish policy trajectory. Traders had positioned for tighter monetary conditions, but the governor’s softer rhetoric signals the NBP may be less inclined to raise rates going forward despite persistent inflation concerns across the region.

The zloty weakened immediately following the remarks as foreign exchange markets repriced Polish monetary policy expectations. Fixed income and currency traders with long zloty positions are reassessing their exposures as the dovish shift reduces the currency’s yield appeal relative to regional peers.

Consider reducing long zloty exposure and monitor European Central Bank policy divergence, as the NBP’s softer stance widens the monetary policy gap with eurozone peers.
