Orange has launched as France’s first merchant to accept Wero for subscription bill payments, marking a significant expansion for the European Payments Initiative’s digital payment solution. The EPI-backed system, originally developed for peer-to-peer transactions, is now moving into commercial bill payment territory through this French telecom giant partnership.

The development signals European banks’ determination to challenge US payment card dominance by creating a homegrown alternative that bypasses traditional card networks. Orange customers can now pay their recurring telecom bills directly through Wero, which processes transactions through immediate bank-to-bank transfers rather than card rails.

This milestone comes as EPI continues rolling out Wero across Europe, aiming to establish a unified payment ecosystem that reduces dependence on Visa and Mastercard infrastructure. The shift from person-to-person payments to merchant billing represents a critical evolution in Wero’s capabilities and commercial viability.

French consumers with participating banks can now access the service, though wider merchant adoption will determine whether Wero can genuinely compete with established payment methods.

Watch for accelerated European merchant adoption of Wero as alternative payment rails gain traction, potentially pressuring traditional card network transaction volumes and fee structures.
