Brent crude prices are declining as OPEC+ begins relaxing production restrictions and tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz returns to normal operations, according to Rabobank Senior Market Strategist Benjamin Picton. The cartel’s decision to ease supply constraints is adding downward pressure on global oil markets after months of tighter output controls designed to support prices.
However, Picton warns that shipping risks through critical maritime chokepoints continue to pose significant threats to price stability. The Strait of Hormuz, which handles roughly one-fifth of global oil supply, remains vulnerable to geopolitical disruptions despite current normalized flows. This creates a divergent market outlook where fundamental supply increases push prices lower while geopolitical risk premiums could quickly reverse losses.
Traders should monitor both OPEC+ production data and Middle East tensions as competing forces shape crude trajectories. The resumption of Hormuz flows provides temporary relief, but the strategic waterway’s vulnerability means supply disruptions could materialize with little warning.

Energy traders should maintain hedging strategies against sudden geopolitical supply shocks even as increased OPEC+ output creates near-term bearish pressure on Brent.
