NatWest confirmed that Wayne Freeman, chief technology officer for both its Boxed Banking-as-a-Service platform and Mettle digital business banking brand, has departed the organization. Freeman had been instrumental in developing the technology infrastructure for NatWest’s digital banking initiatives aimed at small businesses and embedded finance partners. The timing of his exit comes as NatWest continues expanding its fintech offerings in an increasingly competitive UK market for SME banking services.
The departure affects two key NatWest digital properties: Boxed, which provides white-label banking infrastructure to fintech companies and brands, and Mettle, the bank’s standalone digital account platform serving UK small business customers. Both platforms have been central to NatWest’s strategy to compete with challenger banks and capture market share in the embedded finance space. No immediate replacement has been announced, and the bank has not disclosed whether Freeman’s responsibilities will be redistributed or filled externally.
FXnCO Insight
Financial institutions partnering with NatWest’s Boxed platform should monitor for potential service continuity impacts and assess whether this leadership change affects their embedded banking roadmaps.
