MEXC has appointed Robert MacDonald as chief compliance officer effective Wednesday, bringing aboard a veteran who previously held top compliance roles at Bybit, Binance, and Standard Chartered. MacDonald will oversee global compliance strategy, governance frameworks, and regulatory relations as the exchange expands beyond cryptocurrency into tokenized stocks, ETFs, and IPO access—products that trigger securities regulations the platform has largely avoided until now.

MacDonald departed Bybit where he served as chief legal and compliance officer since 2024, managing global licensing and AML programs. His tenure there included navigating the February 2025 breach that resulted in a record $1.4 billion ether theft. The appointment mirrors similar compliance buildouts across major exchanges including OKX and Bitget as regulatory pressure intensifies. MEXC entered July without a MiCA license and its restricted jurisdiction list still excluded EU member states as of May, raising questions about its European market access strategy.

** Traders should monitor whether MacDonald’s hire signals imminent regulatory filings or geographic expansion, particularly MiCA licensing applications that could reshape MEXC’s European availability.
