Ecommpay’s UK Chair Willem Wellinghoff is warning that financial institutions are misallocating fraud prevention resources, prioritising technology spending over critical human training and education. Speaking following the firm’s fraud whitepaper release, Wellinghoff highlighted that employee and merchant preparedness remains severely underutilised despite growing threats.

The warning comes amid escalating concerns about dark web markets now offering sophisticated identity cloning tools, including stolen biographies, identification documents, and even fingerprint data. This availability directly undermines current verification systems relied upon across financial services and fintech platforms.

Wellinghoff stressed that whilst firms continue pouring revenue into technological solutions, the human vulnerability element receives insufficient attention. Better internal communication and fraud expertise training for staff and merchant partners could significantly strengthen defences against increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes.
