The European Union’s authorized crypto sector faces a wave of compliance reviews as new Russia and Belarus sanctions take effect in August, with FM Intelligence projecting between 1,569 and 5,409 governance and counterparty checks across the bloc. The analysis covers 289 authorized crypto-asset service providers in the EU27, with 256 firms holding trading-related permissions placing them directly in scope for mandatory screening. Under a baseline scenario, the sector confronts 2,849 separate review actions.
The compliance burden concentrates heavily in five jurisdictions—Germany, France, Netherlands, Malta and Cyprus—which together host 57 percent of authorized CASPs. Transaction restrictions roll out across three key dates: August 13 for three platforms including A7 Nigeria, August 23 for eleven entities including HTX and BitPapa, and August 25 for ownership and control restrictions targeting Russian and Belarusian interests. The workload follows MiCA’s July 1 transition deadline, which narrowed the authorized crypto market significantly.

** Authorized EU crypto firms should immediately inventory all Russian and Belarusian counterparty relationships and governance connections ahead of the August 13 deadline to avoid regulatory action.
