bitFlyer USA has activated crypto trading services in West Virginia, expanding its operational footprint to 49 US states plus the District of Columbia. The Japanese-owned exchange received its West Virginia Money Transmitter License in February 2026, marking its first major state addition since Connecticut in 2021. Hawaii remains the sole state outside its coverage area. The expansion follows bitFlyer Europe’s June 26 MiCA compliance license from Luxembourg’s CSSF, making it the first Japan-originated exchange approved under the EU’s new crypto framework. That license enables passporting across all 27 EU member states ahead of the July 1 deadline. The dual regulatory push positions bitFlyer as a compliance-focused alternative for institutional clients, particularly those using its Lightning Exchange platform designed for professional and high-frequency traders requiring API access and transparent order books. COO Christopher Temme emphasized the company’s commitment to regulated accessibility without sacrificing security.

bitFlyer’s near-complete US licensing and MiCA approval create a clear regulatory advantage for institutional desks seeking compliant on-ramps in both American and European markets.
