BBVA has become the first Spanish bank to adopt Swift’s new global retail payments scheme, going live with the initiative from its official launch. The scheme introduces a standardized rulebook designed to enable faster, more transparent and predictable cross-border payments operating around the clock for retail customers and small-to-medium enterprises.

The move positions BBVA ahead of Spanish competitors in offering enhanced international payment services to individual clients and SMEs, who have historically faced slower processing times and less transparency in cross-border transactions. Swift’s retail scheme aims to bring consumer and business payments up to the standards already established in institutional banking, with 24/7 availability replacing traditional banking hours constraints.

This development signals a significant upgrade in retail payment infrastructure across Swift’s global network, potentially reshaping customer expectations for international transfers. Other European banks are expected to follow BBVA’s lead as the scheme gains traction.
