Bank of Ireland has named Prag Sharma, previously with Citigroup, as its inaugural chief artificial intelligence officer in a strategic move to accelerate digital transformation. The appointment signals the Irish lender’s commitment to embedding AI capabilities across its operations as financial institutions globally race to leverage machine learning and automation technologies.

Sharma joins from Citigroup where he gained extensive experience implementing AI solutions in banking environments. The newly created position reflects growing pressure on traditional banks to compete with fintech disruptors and optimize efficiency through advanced technologies. Bank of Ireland becomes one of the first major Irish financial institutions to establish a dedicated C-suite AI leadership role.

The hire comes as European banks face mounting competition from AI-native financial services companies and increasing regulatory scrutiny around algorithmic decision-making. Market watchers expect other Irish and European lenders to follow suit with similar executive appointments in coming months.
