The Australian Securities and Investments Commission took down more than 19,400 online scams in fiscal 2026, a 182 percent surge from the prior year, as criminals weaponize generative AI to create sophisticated deepfake campaigns targeting investors. ASIC reported Monday that fraudsters are building interconnected networks of fake celebrity endorsements, fabricated news sites, and artificial reviews that dominate search results and appear independent despite centralized control. Scammers impersonated Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and prominent market commentators, contributing to A$7.4 million in reported losses during the period.
The schemes typically funnel victims from legitimate advertising platforms through fake news stories to fraudulent investment platforms displaying invented profits. ASIC removed 5,476 phishing links—up 279 percent—alongside 7,051 fake investment platforms and 3,106 cryptocurrency scams. Brokers and legitimate platforms face brand impersonation risks while clients struggle to verify offers through standard web searches. Chairwoman Sarah Court warned AI is making scams more convincing and harder to detect.

Financial firms should immediately implement client verification protocols directing customers to independently confirmed contact channels rather than relying on search engine results.
