UK aviation authorities have launched a trial using artificial intelligence to minimize aircraft condensation trails, known as contrails, which contribute significantly to global warming by trapping atmospheric heat. The initiative targets what experts call “sky graffiti” – the white streaks left by planes that can have a warming effect comparable to aviation’s carbon emissions.

The trial will deploy AI systems to help pilots identify and avoid atmospheric conditions where contrails form most persistently. By adjusting flight altitudes in real-time based on AI predictions of temperature and humidity patterns, aircraft can significantly reduce their climate impact without major operational disruptions.

This development comes as aviation faces mounting pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, with contrails estimated to account for roughly two-thirds of aviation’s total climate impact. Airlines participating in the trial could see both regulatory advantages and cost benefits as environmental compliance becomes increasingly tied to market access and fuel efficiency optimization.
