Hungary’s K&H Bank is accelerating its shift away from traditional teller-based banking despite operating in one of Europe’s most cash-dependent markets. Speaking at the Diebold Nixdorf Intersect Cannes event, Norbet Kovats, General Manager of Daily Banking and Operations, outlined the bank’s gradual approach to eliminating teller services while transitioning customers toward digital channels and advanced ATM technology.

The strategy represents a significant operational pivot in a country where cash remains dominant for everyday transactions. K&H is adopting a customer-by-customer migration model rather than forced wholesale changes, acknowledging cultural payment preferences while pushing modernization. Kovats noted this tellerless transformation is gaining momentum across Europe, with K&H positioned as an early mover in the region’s cash-heavy markets.

The move signals broader European banking automation trends that could reshape branch economics and customer service models continent-wide, potentially impacting payment infrastructure providers and cash handling equipment manufacturers.
